Brake Fluid Thingy Leaking

The reservoir holding the brake fluid is leaking when I pump the brakes. I’m wondering if there’s supposed to be some kind of gasket between the lid and the bowl… because there isn’t one right now. I took a few pictures and am hoping someone over at the forums I frequent has the answer to this.

Update: “Brake Fluid Thingy” = Master Cylinder.

Bringing the Car Home

We called Henry at Arizona Differential today, and yes… the car is ready! Jerad brought his nice shiny diamond plate steel tilt bed trailer to the shop to help me bring it home. His trailer sure is nice – the car loads and unloads in seconds. Anyway, I grabbed some videos of him towing the car to my house.

I took pictures of the shop, and I also took pictures of the axles that were originally in the car. There is a thread over at the MopowerStyle forums where we talk about them:

The Garage Is Now Clean

I spent most of the morning cleaning up the garage.  It was pretty easy to get rid of all the rust and greast off the floor – just water and ammonia.  I used a floor mate gadget to help with the process, as well as putting my back into it and scrubbing the diritier parts of the floor by hand.  Now the garage floor sparkles!  The Duster will be glad to come back to such a nice and clean garage.

:-)

Here is a picture of the cleaniness.  Curiousity also got the better of me – I have been wondering if my F-150 would fit in the garage.  So I backed it up slowly and carefully into the garage, and had my wife help me out here too.  What do you know, it fits!  Only about 6 inches of room to spare on each side… so there’s no way to walk from one side of the garage to the other without opening the garage door.

Houston, We Have a Problem!

:-(

Ok I took the car to Arizona Differential. I spend all freaking day boiling in my truck – it was about 115 outside. Finally I get the call to come check the car…

When I get there, Henry (the guy who was working on my car) says there is a problem. He can’t reseal the rear end, and here is why… now bear with me, I tried to keep up with what he was saying – maybe you guys can decipher what I understood and clarify things.

He said whoever worked on the rear end did it on a budget. The axle housing (my terminology, I can’t remember the term he used) was shortened a bit but the original axles were kept. In order to make everything fit, there’s basically no seal at all at the ends of the axle. So the axles are about 1/4" too long – he gave me a choice – he could cut the differential ends of the axle 1/4" but if I send a lot of power to the rear end the axles will come flying off. The other choice is to order up some properly sized axles and install them. Total cost after labor and everything would be $525.

Does this make sense to you guys?

He did tell me that the 8.75 rear end I have do have 4.86 gears and a mini-spool.

Loading Up the Duster!

Tonight I loaded up the Duster on my trailer so I can take it to Arizona Differential tomorrow morning.  I am having them reseal the rear end.  It was a blast driving the car even if it was only for about 200 feet!  Here is a video of the short drive:

And here are some random pictures of us tieing down the car to the trailer.  We cut the tie straps to length and burned the cut edges of the straps so they don’t fray.  The first picture of this series shows the garage floor and what I did to it by spray painting the hood inside the garage.  My wife took this picture and is making me put it up on this blog for all to see.  She used ammonia and water and a little grunt work to take the black off.  Now the garage floor is all nice and shiny again, thanks to my loving, caring, and beautiful wife!  Without further ado, here are the pictures:
